Extracting data from driving course certificates

A course provider issues a certificate when a driver finishes a defensive driving course, and each state sets its own name and format. Insurers check one before granting a discount, and traffic courts before dismissing a ticket. One arrives for every driver claiming the discount, as an emailed PDF, portal upload or printed copy.

An underwriter needs the driver's name and license number, the certificate number, the course type and the completion date. A policy administration system applies the discount from that date and sets its expiry. A court's case management system records the completion and dismisses the charge.

The problem

What makes driving course certificates hard

Every value prints twice

Uniform certificates such as the Texas form print a court copy above an insurance copy on one page, giving each value two candidate locations.

One course goes by many names

Texas calls it a driving safety course and New York a point and insurance reduction course, and each provider designs its own certificate.

Eligibility turns on date and purpose

The completion date starts the discount period, and Florida's statute excludes a course that a court imposed for a moving violation.

How it works

Parse, extract, verify

1

Parse

Parse turns the document into reading-order Markdown and a hierarchy of blocks (text, tables, figures), and grounds each block to its exact location on the page.

2

Extract

You define the fields in a JSON schema, and Extract returns their values in a consistent, structured format, each linked back to where it appears in the Markdown.

3

Verify

Each value links back to where it appears, down to the character range in the Markdown, and the page and bounding box in the source document, so every result can be verified.

Worked example

One driving course certificate, end to end

About this document: A State of Texas driving safety course uniform certificate of completion, issued by a course provider that the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation approves. One portrait page prints the certificate twice, a court copy above an insurance copy, with a large agency watermark behind both. Page 1 is featured. The student's name, address, date of birth, license number and certificate number were replaced with stand-ins.

Processing objective: The objective is to read the court copy as one complete filing, with each value grounded to the top copy and kept apart from its duplicate below. The course was completed to dismiss a citation, so this copy also carries a court block that the insurance copy leaves out.

Demonstration fields: Certificate number, Court, Reason for course, Completion date, Issue date

Documents into data

Accurate

The best accuracy on the difficult documents other tools get wrong, such as messy scans, complicated tables, checkboxes and handwriting.

Auditable

Every answer cites its sources. Values come back with an audit trail (page, bounding box, character range) so a human can review them.

Agentic

Applies multi-step reasoning, and plans before it acts. Handles documents it has never seen before and adapts to variations.

API-first

Composable APIs that drop into any tech stack and can be called from anywhere. Easy to build on and embed in your pipelines and products.

Affordable

Cost-competitive rates with complete price transparency. Spend controls before you run, and every job reports its exact cost.

Enterprise-grade

Built for production and scale from day one. Fully observable and monitored, running securely in our cloud or yours.

Built for high-volume, high-throughput production

  • Zero data retention
  • Priority rate limits
  • Enhanced support

FAQs

Questions, answered

No. A schema names the fields you want and describes them in plain language. Alternative names cover labels that change from one provider to the next, so one schema reads certificates from different states and course providers.

Yes. Each copy's label is part of the parsed Markdown, and every extracted value carries the character ranges it was quoted from. The Ground API maps each range to a page and a bounding box, so a reviewer sees which copy a value came from.

Yes. Dates come back in ISO form, year first, while grounding still points at the month-first string the provider printed. A discount's expiry can be computed directly from the normalized completion date.

Yes. Parse accepts PDFs and image files such as JPEG, PNG and TIFF. A phone photo of a printed certificate goes through the same schema as a provider's emailed PDF, and returns the same grounding.

A certificate carries a driver license number, a date of birth and a mailing address. Accounts are available with zero data retention, so results are deleted as soon as you retrieve them, alongside SOC 2 Type II, GDPR and HIPAA compliance.
